‘I LIKED THE IDEA OF LOOKING AT A PAINTING THAT YOU COULD NOT LOOK AT JUST FROM THE FRONT, BUT HAD TO MOVE AROUND.’ - SEAN SCULLY

Sean Scully, works from the 1980s, is a touring show organised by Leeds Art Gallery and closed this week at Visual in Carlow, Ireland. The exhibition is supported by the Arts Council.

Sean Scully is one of the leading abstract painters working today. His work is widely credited with having expanded the possibilities of abstract painting after minimalism. Scully cultivates dimension and expression by re-introducing colour, space, and texture to minimalist works through the application of multiple layers of paint. Relief-like elements lend his work a physical and emphatic quality, as stripes widen and pulsate, colour is intensified, and harmony balances on the edge of collapse.

The exhibition explores Scully’s work from the 1980s, a period during which many of his paintings were acquired by major museums as he gained international recognition. In recent years, this period of the artist’s career has not been reflected in gallery exhibitions, and the Leeds Art Gallery is pleased to present a selection of paintings by Sean Scully from the 1980s, along with works on paper provided by the artist from his private collection

The Leeds Art Gallery is also pleased to present a catalogue illustrating 58 paintings from the 1980s is accompanying the exhibition. Free exhibition talks are to be held on Tuesday & Thursday at 1pm, and Saturday at 11am.
