Winners of the Emerging Artist Awards 2010
Our city's artistic talent was this week brought to the forefront of the creative scene with an electric awards evening for everyone in attendance. It was time to find out who would be crowned the Emerging Artists 2010. The four award categories this year were Fine Art, Craft, Design and Creative Enterprise - receiving more entries than ever before.
Winner of the Fine Art Practitioner Award - Bruce Rimmell
Bruce Rimmell uses Adobe Illustrator to create design and print on either cotton satin or canvas. Once the print is done, the material is steamed, washed and dried. His work has an oriental feel that was also demonstrated in his winning piece, My Blood Is Red Ochre But My Heart Is Made From Stars (a similar colour and style to the example shown on the left).
Winner of the Craft Practitioner Award - Pam Pauling
The delighted self-taught mixed media artist collected her award for Travelling Butterflies, a beautiful and intelligent piece of work made from stamps and silk.
"I'm thrilled to pieces", says Pam Pauling. "I never expected this, but it's really given me the push I needed to believe in myself. I'm really excited about what's possible now that I've won this award."
Winner of the Design Award - Garry Smith
Gary Smith is the designer behind Parlour Furniture, who was unfortunately exhibiting at another show on the evening.
Another designer who was my personal favourite on the night, was British Artist Tim Green with Welcome to the Glorious Future (shown to the left).
Winner of the Creative Enterprise Award - Emily Farncombe
Emily Farncombe runs a unique upholstery business in Leeds. You can see from her winning design below, it would make a modern, contemporary impact in any home environment.
Each winner received £100, business mentoring throughout the coming year, and the chance to hold their own private exhibition.
Previous award winners have found it to be a much-needed platform within Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area, achieving great success. Congratulations to you all!
