Double success for architectural technology graduates
Two recent graduates from Sheffield Hallam University have had their work commended by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
Emma Walshaw and Conor Lawless, who both studied architectural technology and graduated this year, won awards in the CIAT’s student awards for Technical Excellence in Architectural Technology.
The awards recognise the achievement of technical excellence in a study project.
Emma Walshaw, who is originally from Wakefield, was Highly Commended for her "innovative" design for a "complex and complicated" roof structure. Judges said Emma had demonstrated "creative thinking" in her proposed design solution. She was also awarded £500.
Conor Lawless, from Galway in Ireland, was Commended for his project for a caring centre, made from locally sourced materials. Judges said the strength of Conor's project "lay in its simplicity" and that it "gave good long term performance through low cost operation and maintenance". He received £250.
CIAT is the industry body which represents professionals working and studying in the field of architectural technology.
Andrew Wilson, lecturer in architecture at Sheffield Hallam, said: "We're delighted to have had so much success at this year's CIAT’s student awards. Emma and Conor should be very proud of their achievements.
"The prizes continue our longstanding success in these national awards, demonstrating the strength of our courses and the depth of talent that can be found on them."
Sheffield Hallam was one of the first universities to offer a degree in architectural technology and one of the first to be fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
