Ice House goes brolly mad for National Trust

The National Trust commissioned Bath-based Ice House Design to celebrate the lives of three famous women gardeners with installations at NT properties. The agency responded to this unusual brief with sculptures made from umbrellas and Maypoles.

Vita Sackville-West, Gertrude Jekyll and Phyllis Reiss are probably three of the most famous women gardeners in the UK; their legacy of garden designs and planting schemes can be seen at many NT properties nationwide.

Ice House Design produced three different sculptures inspired by these women's characters, and also by their approach to planting and colour. The sculptures are situated in the grounds of places where their work had a profound impact.

At Montecute House, the tribute to Vita Sackville West comprises a giant ball of brightly coloured brollies, standing over 3 metres tall. At Barrington Court, Gertrude's tribute is also made from brollies, only here they are laid out in the gardens, reflecting a planting scheme with the colours moving from warm to cold. In Tintinhull Gardens, two 5m Maypoles with bright, white ribbons flowing out from each, form an eye-catching outdoor installation, celebrating the life and work of Phyllis Reiss.

Installed on 2 June, the three artworks will be on display at the above NT properties (all of which are located in Somerset) until the end of September. They are supported by promotional print collateral also produced by the agency.

Ice House Design has worked with the National Trust for a number of years, and is currently involved with other projects for the organisation at Stour Head and Corfe Castle.
