Emma’s slice of the cake

Middlesex University graduate Emma Block is taking a slice of the illustration world with the publication of a book packed with tea and cake recipes illustrated by the Southgate resident.

‘Tea and Cake’, published by Hardie Grant, is a quintessential collection of recipes for the perfect afternoon tea, all beautifully illustrated by the recent BA Illustration graduate. The book shows you how to make everything from cherry cakes to Chelsea buns and even gives tips on how to make the perfect cuppa.

Emma said: “It is strange seeing my illustrations in bookshops like Waterstones and available to buy on Amazon - it’s a nice feeling though.”

Despite only graduating in the summer Emma already has a number of big names under her belt including Time Out magazine, the British Heart Foundation, and Woodmansterne.

Emma, who was awarded a first class honours degree from Middlesex University in the summer, has also been praised by industry website Arts Thread, describing her as “fast becoming one of our favourite up-and-coming illustrators.”

Emma puts her success down to self promotion and being proactive. She said: “It’s all about getting your name and work out there – I’ve been doing freelance illustration from my first year at university. This built up my portfolio and gave me an online presence allowing companies to find and commission me to do work. Since the final year degree show I’ve always had two or three jobs on the go, it’s been very busy for me.

“My tutors were very supportive and gave me a well rounded focus on different aspects of illustration. The print room facility at Middlesex was great, I spent a lot of my time in there.”

The book Tea & Cake, illustrated by Emma and published by Hardie Grant, is available to buy now. To find out more visit http://www.mdx.ac.uk/.
