Review: Nigel French at Artists Open Houses
Artists Open Houses is a festival in Brighton that celebrates local artists and makers who open up their homes to the public to showcase their work. Following this year's Christmas trail around Hove on a sunny Saturday I was very lucky to come across graphic designer, photographer, author and teacher Nigel French.
His partner Melanie Hobson welcomed me into their home and showed me a collection of his work, which included graphic design pieces and photography from around the globe.
Nigel used to live in San Francisco where he operated his own design business, Small World Productions, and later became the director of the graphic and interactive design program at UC Berkeley Extension. He's author of InDesign Type and Photoshop Unmasked (both Adobe Press) and several titles for the Lynda.com online training library.
He has taught graphic design and design software for more than 15 years in the US and the UK to students from a wide range of backgrounds and ages, and covering all levels of experience. Concurrent with his design projects, he travels nationally and internationally teaching InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Lightroom to a broad cross-section of the creative industries.
I felt very privileged to be able to view his work - including some fantastic photographs by Melanie. Plus amongst the collections were some beautiful chopping boards created by local artist Darcy Dench. You can see them photographed below.
