Editorial training comes to Belfast
The Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP) is bringing two of its most popular one-day training courses to Belfast in November. The Crescent Arts Centre will be the venue for Introduction to web editorial skills (3 November) and Introduction to proofreading (4 November), and both courses are open to SfEP members and non-members alike.
The move follows the recent establishment of an SfEP group in Northern Ireland by local editor Averill Buchanan. She is keen to involve as many editors and proofreaders as possible in SfEP activities and local networking.
'I joined the SfEP in 2006, and I've found the training and resources it offers invaluable,' says Averill. 'As an organisation it's very much focused on raising professional standards in publishing across the British Isles. So I'm delighted that the Northern Ireland group is now up and running - and thrilled that the SfEP can offer these courses here.'
As well as valuing opportunities for professional development, Averill also appreciates the support and camaraderie that she's experienced through membership of the Society. Mostly this happens online, though recently she travelled to the SfEP's annual conference in Oxford to meet up with other editors and proofreaders.
'It was great to be able to put faces to names,' Averill says. 'The workshops were excellent, but the social side of the event was just as important. That's what I'm hoping our new group will bring to Belfast - the chance for fellow professionals to get together and share ideas and experiences.'
