Emmy award winning artist Winnie O’Brien has taken Birmingham coffee chain Urban Coffee Company by storm, with a popular art display in their Jewellery Quarter emporium.
Winnie, who spent nine years at Pebble Mill designing and art directing title sequences for BBC programmes, relocated some of her finest artwork to the Urban Coffee store just one week ago and has been a hit with the Urban crowd, selling in excess of 20 pieces already.
Winnie’s independent exhibition showcases her talents as a designer, illustrator and animator with an eclectic mix of artwork bringing colour and texture to the walls at Urban Coffee Company. The exhibition, entitled ‘Conversations’ hints at Winnie’s Brummie roots with some pieces subtly depicting popular city landmarks including Selfridges and the University of Birmingham tower.
She has moved back to her former home of Wylde Green after a stint in San Francisco, where she scooped a Broadcast Designers Association silver award, and has several new projects in the pipeline, including writing and illustrating children’s picture books.
Winnie, who cites her inspirations as people, nature, landscapes and language, said: “I can’t believe how well this exhibition is going. We’re only a week in and it’s already a success and is certainly a lot of fun.
“Urban Coffee Company is a great location here in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter. The space is perfect for hanging artwork with its tall ceilings, big white walls and great lighting. It’s such a popular place with great coffee and food.
“The staff are wonderful and people seem to really love coming here - whether for a coffee on the run, a brunch with friends or a business meeting out of the office.This is the first time I’ve showcased my work outside of an art gallery and it’s been a worthwhile experience. Art and coffee seems to be a fusion that really works.”
Winnie’s ‘Conversations’ exhibition will be running at Urban Coffee Company until the end of the month. Head down to the Jewellery Quarter branch for some of Urban’s wonderfully tasty coffee and Winnie’s beautifully tasteful art.
