University running ten week practical course for fine artists

Budding fine artists who want to improve their skills and develop their portfolios are being given the opportunity to attend a ten-week practical course at Nottingham Trent University. The course – Portfolio Preparation for Fine Art – will be run on Saturdays and aimed at those who are passionate about art, are considering applying to art school and are open to new ideas and ways of learning.

There will be two opportunities to take part, with tutors from the university’s School of Art and Design delivering the course on Saturdays from January 15 to March 19 and then again from April 23 to June 25.

Students, who must be over 16 and can be beginners or experienced artists, will engage in a variety of projects across the fine art disciplines such as drawing and observation skills, life drawing, painting, simple printmaking and working in 3D. They will be given demonstrations involving various processes and materials to support their own discipline, while being encouraged to experiment and develop their personal approach.

Experts will provide portfolio advice, and group discussions will show students how to build content, demonstrate the idea generation process and present work to its fullest potential. By the end of the course students will have sketchbooks with a range of ideas, completed works and work-in-progress, which should help their art school or university applications to stand out.

The courses, which will run from 10am to 2pm on Saturdays, will take place in the university’s Bonington building on the city campus.
