The winners of two significant photography awards from the esteemed Shot Up North (SUN) awards stable, were announced at the Design Innovation Centre, Leeds in October.
Martin Brent from Birmingham is the first winner of progressive new award SUN-Motion with his surreal ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ which was named SUN-Motion Movie of the Year. Simon Thompson from Apperley Bridge won the SUN-Rise award which is given to newcomers with his stunning image from a fashion shoot.
The SUN-Motion Award is a chance for stills photographers working within the disciplines of advertising, editorial, design and fashion to exploit the full creative potential of video on a stills camera. Ed Horwich, co- founder of Shot up North commented: ‘We introduced the new SUN-Motion award as the video capability in stills cameras is now incredibly good and has ignited photographers’ imaginations, whilst also extending what they can offer to clients’.
The winners of SUN-Motion award were:
Movie of the Year – ‘Seven Sins’ directed by Martin Brent, Birmingham
2nd – ‘Longdown’ directed by Tony Lendill, Leeds
3rd – ‘Newcastle College’ directed by Johnny Carr, Batley
SUN-Motion was judged anonymously by an independent panel of key figures in the industry including:
Daf Hobson – BAFTA Award winning freelance Director of Photography, North Wales Rich Ward – Art Director at Gratterpalm, Leeds Chris Birks – Video Editor, VTR North, Leeds
The SUN-Rise award was launched in 2009 to showcase professional photographers at the beginning of their photographic careers or still in the process of building up their portfolio. Jonathan Oakes, winner of the SUN award for Best Image in 2009 and judge of 2009’s SUN-Rise award commented: ‘In the current climate it’s important to stay visible and demonstrate the enthusiasm you have for your profession. SUN-Rise is a great incentive for younger photographers to get their foot on the ladder and test out their ideas on critical friends.’
