Venue: CCA 4 (cinema) Dir. Sally Potter 1983, 89m, U cert
The Gold Diggers is the groundbreaking first feature from Sally Potter, director of Orlando and The Tango Lesson. Made with an all female crew, featuring stunning photography by Babette Magolte and a score by Lindsay Cooper, it embraces a radical and experimental narrative structure. Celeste, played by Colette Laffont, is a computer clerk in a bank who becomes fascinated by the relationship between gold and power. Julie Christie stars as Ruby, an enigmatic film star in quest of her childhood, her memories, and the truth about her own identity. As their paths cross they come to sense that there could be a link between the male struggle for economic supremacy and the female ideal of mysterious but impotent beauty.
'A feminist sci-fi musical extravaganza... Remains consistently fresh and unpredictable.' Sight and Sound
The Gold Diggers launches Distant Voices, a brand new film strand at CCA for 2010/2011, celebrating iconic films by British filmmakers, including Sally Potter and Powell & Pressburger. The films selected span the 20th century, tracing the social struggles and filmic innovations of that period. The screenings offer a rare chance to see overlooked masterpieces such as I Know Where I’m Going, and well loved classics like Whisky Galore! From gritty depictions of mid-century northern England, to intricately plotted film noir, the programme showcases the depth, diversity and genius of British cinema.
