Suffolk school pupils are working with The Suffolk Craft Society and Eastfeast to create artwork inspired by their local area of outstanding natural beauty, for exhibition in Ipswich and Sudbury during May and June.
Coordinated by Eastfeast, members of the Suffolk Craft Society are working in schools in Suffolk to share their skills in ceramics, glass, felt, print and willow. They have been working with children aged 5-12 years based in the Dedham Vale AONB and Stour Valley Project area and in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB.
By working with professional Suffolk based artists, who themselves make artwork for exhibition and sale, the children were able to learn techniques that they may not otherwise come across during their school careers. The school pupils were encouraged to use art to reflect on their ideas and experiences of the natural environment local to their school. A collection of the resulting art work is to be shown to the public in three exhibitions in professional galleries and exhibition spaces throughout the Summer of 2011.
The first of this series of three exhibitions will be on show in Sudbury from 4th to 10th May at Gallery 47, Gainsborough Street, Sudbury, open daily 10am – 4pm. The second collection of the school children’s’ work will be on exhibition at Gallery 2, the Suffolk Craft Society’s permanent gallery at the Town Hall Galleries in Ipswich from 28th May to 18th June, which is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am- 5pm. Both exhibitions have free admission so please do pop in and see what the children have achieved; don’t miss it!
This project has enjoyed a great deal of support from partners including the Dedham Vale AONB and Stour Valley Project, Creative Partnerships, Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB and the Britten Pears Foundation.
