'Shot Up North' photography awards

SUN-MOTION Award: Deadline 30 September 2010 SUNRISE Award: Deadline 17 September 2010

Time is running out for photographers to have a chance for their work to be in the limelight by entering it into one of two new categories of the esteemed Shot up North (SUN) awards. These are:

SUN-MOTION – This progressive new award caters for photographers using video in stills cameras. A chance for photographers to show off new creative possibilities discovered with this rapidly evolving medium, the award is for photographers working within the disciplines of advertising, editorial, design and fashion. Ed Horwich, co- founder of Shot up North commented: ‘We introduced the new SUN-MOTION award as the video capability in stills cameras is now incredibly good and has ignited photographers’ imaginations, whilst also extending what they can offer to clients’.

SUNRISE – This award was created last year to showcase professional photographers at the beginning of their photographic careers or still in the process of building up their portfolio. Jonathan Oakes, winner of the SUN award for Best Image in 2009 and judge of 2009’s SUNRISE award commented: ‘In the current climate it’s important to stay visible and demonstrate the enthusiasm you have for your profession. SUNRISE is a great incentive for younger photographers to get their foot on the ladder and test out their ideas.

Selected SUN-MOTION and SUNRISE entries will appear in a special Shot up North online showcase. Two winners will be selected as SUN MOTION movie of the year and SUNRISE Photographer of the year. Successful entries will be shown at the SUN 22 Premier Night in Leeds, provisionally in October.

Shot Up North showcases the spread of talent based in northern Britain. First founded in 1988 with the aim of unifying the photographic industry, the SUN awards provide a chance for professional photographers to gain recognition for some of the imagery we see everyday.
