Sculptors work unveiled in Munich

Lichfield born sculptor and artist Peter Walker arbs returned back to his studio this week after installing a collection of major public artworks at BMW’s impressive central operations facility in Munich Germany.

The collection which comprises three large scale exterior works and four internal sculptures was created after Peter was asked to produce the works for this significant installation last year. Part of the collection was displayed in this years Lichfield Festival within Lichfield Cathedral.

“I was invited to meet with BMW last year after my work came to their attention and the opportunity transpired to create this collection to be installed at their facility. Of course this was a great opportunity and a fantastic means of presenting work to a new audience in Germany. The site is a wonderful central location in a beautiful city, and this represents the first time that they have worked with an international sculptor to install works there, and therefore it was a great honour to be asked.” Peter Walker

The sculptures were created to represent construction within nature and to characterize a sense of the antique in the Automotive industry. “We decided to produce works which felt as though they had been around for generations, as though they had been dug up, classical artefacts which relate to the evolution of the construction of the natural world. This offers a fantastic polemic to the fresh clean lines and design of modernity which are characterized in the vehicles which BMW produce. ”. Peter Walker.

Peters family have a long tradition of involvement in the automotive industry and the exhibition offered a nice opportunity to produce work which links to the world he was brought up in.

Peter who is an elected member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, and the Lichfield Society of Artists has produced numerous public works around the UK. He has a long standing involvement in the arts in Lichfield and many will have seen his bronze sculpture, ‘The Formation of Poetry’ which was created for the city in 2010. He is currently working on several other major projects around the Uk, including the production of a statue of Erasmus Darwin which is to be installed in Beacon Park in Lichfield later next year. Peter who is Chairman of Lichfield Arts Foundation is also one of a collection of sculptors commissioned for the prestigious Art at the Edge sculpture project who have produced artworks relating to 26 Olympic Sports. Peter was commissioned to create a work which responded to the legacy of British Olympic Rowing, and as a result worked closely with rowers at Shrewsbury School for the production of an artwork which is being cast in Bronze and will be displayed around the UK next year.
