Realise, the new Edinburgh-based furniture design business with strong ethical principles, launched two distinctive and finely crafted pieces of furniture at Scotland’s Housing Expo.
Design professionals and members of the public alike, described the work as “really beautiful . . . delicate and elegant . . . an ingenious design” and “not just furniture . . . this is Art”.
The innovative designs can be viewed until the end of August, when visiting the cedar shingle-clad, Skewed House by Oliver Chapman Architects’ (Plot 23).
Realise’s furniture is born out of a unique collaboration between designer, Simon Whatley, and the independent makers based at Bodan's workshops on Albion Road, Edinburgh. Cabinetmakers, metal, glass and leather workers have been engaged in an exciting creative process to develop prototypes and to manufacture these beautiful, functional objects in time for the EXPO.
Simon has over 20 years experience in architecture, regeneration and design and has created bespoke furniture for private clients and businesses in Edinburgh and London. He has also worked in high-end furniture retail, eg. The Conran Shop in London.
Realise never compromise on the quality of the finished product. The longevity of the furniture is ensured by specifying high-performance materials, that are finely crafted by experienced cabinetmakers. Realise only uses sustainably sourced hardwoods from managed forests, other natural products, and reclaimed or recycled materials. Realise supports the local economy by working with a network of highly-skilled, independent makers to fulfill demand for the products.
Simon will be at the Skewed House to answer visitors’ questions about his furniture designs on Friday 27th, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th August
