An iconic image produced by UK artist-photographer Helena Seget is to be part of an attempt to save the Globe Contemporary Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Helena has donated a photo-print of her work 'Avocado 2' to The Globe, who are auctioning it to raise much-needed funds for their future.
'Avocado 2' represents a moment in Helena's 'Tony Blair Artist-Rat' project. Helena had noticed that a pet rat seemed to have artistic tendencies in the way it shaped everyday items as it gnawed them.
Helena was particularly struck by the way an avocado had been shaped - a moment immortalised by this photo. The project gained worldwide notoriety, and was reported on in countries as far apart as China and Canada.
Helena said: "I'm very happy to support the Globe, which has a real commitment to supporting emerging artists. It creates ways in which new work can be accessed by a general public - and that can only be a good thing."
The 'Avocado 2' print that is being auctioned is one of a limited run. The artist will sign it if requested. Bidding is already under-way online on the Globe website, but will close on 2nd December 2011 with a final live auction.
