Photography student honoured at city’s young creative awards

A Nottingham Trent University student has won first prize in the photography category in the Nottingham Young Creative Awards. In keeping with the overall theme ‘music’, final year undergraduate Hayley Roos submitted a piece of work for the 18-22 age category to illustrate how music can take listeners away from reality and into another world. Another student, Emily Johnston, was named runner-up in the visual arts category.

The awards, organised by One Nottingham and Nottingham City Council, are now in their third year and aim to celebrate the creative talents of young people across the city. Other categories included film, graphics, music and creative writing, as well as an award for the overall young creative of the year.

Hayley, a student in the university’s School of Art and Design, said: “I was very surprised to win the award. It’s a really nice feeling to win something based on a skill you have worked really hard at improving. It has made me even more determined to make my photography career a success.

“The piece tries to show what music is to me – an escape, a mood changer. It takes you somewhere that only you can see and feel.”

Nigel Cooke, Director of One Nottingham, said “The awards were a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate the wealth of creative talent we have in Nottingham and reflects our ambition to be a world class city. On behalf of One Nottingham and Nottingham City Council I’d like to congratulate everyone who helped make this event a huge success. Special congratulations go to all of the winners.”

It is the second consecutive year that a student from Nottingham Trent University has won the photography award.

This year’s winners were announced at a ceremony at Nottingham Trent University, which supported the competition along with Fast Graphics, Confetti Media Group, South Nottingham College, New College Nottingham and Fourmost Films.

Entries for the competition were judged by a panel of experts from different sectors.
