One week to go until Liverpool Art Prize nominations deadline

There is less a week left to nominate artists for the Liverpool Art Prize 2012. Nominations for the prize will close on Friday 25th November, after which a distinguished panel of judges will decide who is shortlisted through to the next stage of the competition.

The Liverpool Art Prize is a competition of contemporary art open to all professional artists based or born in the Liverpool City Region or in the surrounding boroughs of Liverpool, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley, Halton and Sefton.

The Prize’s previous winners are Imogen Stidworthy, AL and AL, David Jacques and this year’s winner Markus Soukup, who will shortly be exhibiting at the Walker Art Gallery as part of his prize. Aside from the officially judged prize, there is also the People’s Choice prize, which has previously been won by James Quin, Brendan Lyons, The Singh Twins and Elizabeth Willow who have also gone on to achieve great respect within the industry. 2010 People’s Choice winner James Quin is currently exhibiting at Metal as part of the Edge Hill Archive project.

The nominations will be whittled down to a shortlist of 4 artists, who will exhibit at Metal for a 2 month period in Spring next year, by a highly qualified panel of judges: Mike Stubbs, CEO of FACT, Laura Davis, Arts Editor of the Liverpool Daily Post, Sook-Kyung Lee, Curator at Tate Liverpool and last year’s winner Markus Soukup.

2012 will mark the 5th anniversary of Liverpool Art Prize that was established in Liverpool’s Capital of Culture Year, 2008 and was inspired by the Tate Turner Prize that was held in Liverpool the previous year. It will return to Metal at Edge Hill Station from 26 April – 9 June 2012.

Nominations are accepted from all artistic disciplines. Artists are free to nominate themselves and those wishing to submit a nomination may nominate up to three artists.

The artist(s) needs to be born in or currently be based in the Liverpool City Region, which includes the boroughs of Liverpool, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley, Halton and Sefton. Nominated artists need to have made a demonstrable contribution or impact on the Liverpool art scene and to have developed a unique and individual art practice. They also need to have exhibited or realised a project or piece of work in the previous year (June 2010- Present) and there needs to be evidence of this online in order to complete your nomination.

The Liverpool Art Prize 2012 exhibition of 4 shortlisted artists will take place at Metal at Edge Hill Station, artists will need to be available to exhibit from April 26th until June 9th. Artists who have been shortlisted for the prize in the previous two years are not legible for the prize.

Jenny Porter, Project Manager at Metal / The Liverpool Art Prize said: “We’re really looking forward to next year’s prize. With it being the fifth year we’re really pulling out all the stops and are working on a few different ways to increase the scope of the prize. It’s an excellent way to reach local and national audiences that shows off the amazing talent we have in this region.”

Mike Stubbs, CEO at FACT and Liverpool Art Prize judge said: “Liverpool Art Prize has become a highlight on the city's cultural calendar and is an increasingly important opportunity for professional artists to test their principles and latest work in front of a wider audience."
