Mid Pennine Arts promoting five a day in Accrington schools

AN innovative project organised by Mid Pennine Arts to promote healthy eating is set to run this week, involving five Accrington schools. The project called “Five a Day!” is an arts project funded by Tesco Accrington and takes place at St. John with St. Augustine Primary School, Arago Street, Accrington. The other schools involved in the project besides the hosts are Hyndburn Park Primary, Springhill Primary, Benjamin Hargreaves C of E Primary and Baxenden C of E Primary.

People can visit the school to see the project each day between 10am and 3 pm until Friday 23 September 2011. Those intending to visit should call 01254 392717 or e-mail: mrs.humphreys@st-john-augustine.lancs.sch.uk)

As part of the project, Mid Pennine Arts has commissioned two northwest artists Angie Baptie, who specialises in textile designs and Chris Rainham, who specialises in acrylic art work.

The artists have worked with a class from each school exploring the theme of healthy foods: ‘five a day’! This has generated plenty of discussion about where food comes from, as well as an exploration of working with different materials before each child produced their own piece for exhibition.

This week’s exhibition celebrates and features all the work produced by Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 children from the five schools who took part in the programme.

Dr Stephanie Hawke, Mid Pennine Arts’ Head of Creative Learning, commented: “”Five a Day!” has been an excellent experience, with Mid Pennine Arts commissioning two artists to work on such a positive theme with young people from five Accrington schools. It’s been exciting to see such fantastic creativity and wonderful imagination.”
