It’s a Wonderful Life in Derby this December

It's a Wonderful Life

QUAD in Derby has lined up a host of films and activities with a Christmas theme throughout December.

The season of films, entitled ‘Cool Yule’, will be screened; with classic titles The Bishop’s Wife (U) and It’s A Wonderful Life (U) alongside new release The Merry Gentlemen (15), plus ‘Cine Kids’ screenings of family films The Grinch (PG) and the new Disney film, A Christmas Carol (PG). Cinema tickets range from £6.00 full price (£5.00 concessions) to £2.00 for Cine Kids screenings. For screening times and to book tickets, please contact QUAD Box office on 01332 290606, or see the QUAD website here.

Seasonal family activities in QUAD include Design a Christmas Tree Decoration, a workshop in which participants can design and paint their own tree decoration, which is suitable for adults and children aged 6 and over (under 12’s must be accompanied by an adult). The free workshops will take place on Saturday 28th November and again on 5th December, both workshops run from 10:00am until 12 noon, places are limited so booking is essential. The decorations produced from the workshops will be hung on the ‘Derby Christmas Tree’ as part of ‘Christmas Playground’.

Christmas Playground will be in Derby’s Market Place from 7th December to 6th January. Unique to Derby, the Christmas Playground will feature giant wooden toy sculptures which will provide a play area for visitors to the city centre seeking a break from Christmas shopping, particularly those with young children. Visitors will be encouraged to climb aboard the giant toys, which have been sculpted in wood by local environmental artist Andrew Frost - and let their imagination run wild!

For those looking for that perfect gift, a Don’t Panic Gift Bazaar will take place in QUAD on Saturday 12th December from 10:00am to 8:00pm. Customers can come and browse the stalls throughout QUAD, which will be selling original crafts, locally made products and things festive that would make the perfect present. Entry to the Don’t Panic Gift Bazaar is free.

Customers in QUAD can also be entertained by school choirs performing in QUAD. Children from local schools will be singing festive favourites in QUAD from 5:45pm to 6:15pm on Tuesday 15th December, Wednesday 16th December, Thursday 17th December and Saturday 19th December. There is no charge to come and hear the choirs.

A QUAD Arcade Machine will be available in the Level 2 Foyer in QUAD throughout December, with festive animations and games, including work created by local people in conjunction with Artists from QUAD and new work created by digital Artists. The QUAD Arcade Machine will be free to use and suitable for young people and adults.

A QUAD Christmas Film Quiz will take place in the Coors Café Bar at QUAD on Thursday 3rd December from 8:00pm until 10:30pm. Customers can join film lecturer David Leicester for a festive twist on the monthly quiz, with film clips, DJ segments, prizes and Café Bar discounts throughout the evening, the film quiz is £1.00 entrance per person.

For those who cannot wait until December to see something festive, there is a collection of films in the BFI Mediatheque at QUAD themed around the festive season, called Santa’s Grotto. The BFI Mediatheque @ QUAD is a digital jukebox of over 1,500 complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive. New collections are regularly added, and Santa’s Grotto is one of the collections of films permanently available to view. The BFI Mediatheque @ QUAD is free to use, and available to all, customers just need to sign up for a free Mediatheque membership card from the QUAD Box office.
