Graduation film shortlisted for public choice award

A short film by two BA (Hons) Animation Production graduates from the Arts University College at Bournemouth has been shortlisted for a British Animation Award (BAA).

Train of Thought, the graduation film by Leo Bridle, co-directed by Ben Thomas, has been nominated for a Public Choice Award, which audiences can vote for at screenings across the country, including those being held in February at the University College.

The film is set in a world made entirely out of paper, where the wistful drawings in a man's sketchbook are brought to life by the rhythm of a train journey. The filmmakers used digital compositing software, but all the animation and models were done by hand, not with CGI, and Leo admits it was hard work. He explains “Train of Thought was a big team effort and involved students from across the University College ¬– from Modelmaking, Film Production, Animation and Costume. We were also grateful for funding we received from Skillset, which allowed us to work with professional actors and create a film that would not have been possible on our own.”

Held every two years, the BAAs are the most prestigious awards in animation, recognising British animation talent across all media, with past winners including Nick Park, Tim Burton and David Shrigley.

The Public Choice Awards are divided into three categories (Advertisement, Music Video and Film) with 35 entries in total. Leo says “Ben and I are really excited to have Train of Thought included in the BAA awards this year. The level of the films selected seems really high and we are honoured to be considered alongside them. We really hope that the BAA audiences enjoy our film and will support us in the Public Choice vote.”

BAA director Jayne Pilling adds “The Public Choice awards allow the film-loving public to have a say about which animations have captured their imaginations. We’ve put together a shortlist which reflects the best and most innovative talent that the British animation industry has to offer.”

Public Choice screenings at the Arts University College at Bournemouth are being held on 12th, 16th and 23rd February. For more information, visit www.aucb.ac.uk

The British Animation Awards will be held on 8th April 2010 in London.
