Edinburgh Animators Go Zero Budget For Good Causes!

Sister animation brands Binary Fable and Coevolution have got together to launch Free Fridays offering zero budget animation to good causes.

Free Fridays invites anyone who would like an animation, from new bands looking for an animated music video to charities aiming to raise awareness of an issue, to apply. The selected projects will be produced free of charge.

It’s anticipated that a free animation might be useful to new bands, charities, campaigning groups, first-time authors or theatre companies, but the team are looking forward to being surprised by applications that suggest uses for animation they haven’t yet considered.

The aim of Free Fridays is to allow the award-winning animators to have fun and get creative on projects that will really help people. Every Friday will be dedicated to working, without charge, on Free Friday projects.

The first Free Friday project has been revealed: a music video for the band Audability. Audability is currently recording a debut album in Drake Music Scotland’s new recording studio in Craigmillar, Edinburgh (funded by a People’s Millions grant from the Big Lottery Fund and opened in May 2010 by The Proclaimers). The animated music video will be ready for launch in September 2010, along with the album.

The next deadline for applications to Free Fridays is 30 July 2010. Full details of how to apply can be found online here.

Director of Binary Fable and animator Adam Brewster says: 'We’re looking forward to finding some new challenges through Free Fridays. It will give us the opportunity to collaborate on exciting projects and, we hope, make a difference to groups who wouldn’t normally be able to commission animation. Our first project is a perfect example – we’re privileged to work with the brilliant Audability on a song from their debut album.'

Thursa Sanderson, Drake Music Scotland’s Chief Executive says,

'We really welcome Binary Fable’s fantastic offer of a free music video for Audability and the idea for Free Fridays is both creative and innovative.  It’s great that our work with musicians with disabilities is being supported in this way and we look forward to seeing the results when the album is launched.” Audability are very excited at the prospect and say, “If animation can do for us what it did for the Gorillaz we’ll be over the moon!'
