Concrete Wardrobe – Maker of the Month

Concrete Wardrobe is a unique retail space on Edinburgh's Broughton Street. Stocking work from over 200 Scottish-based or Scottish-trained designer makers, from disciplines as diverse as silk screen printing, weaving, ceramics, knitting, fashion design, jewellery, lighting design, glass and printmaking.

Co-owned by Fiona McIntosh and James Donald, Concrete Wardrobe is dedicated to promoting affordable, high quality work from Scottish-based or Scottish-trained designer makers. Work is manufactured and supplied as one-off pieces or as small batch production ranges, many of which are exclusive to Concrete Wardrobe. The staff also have process knowledge, an understanding of the products within the space, extensive practical skills and all supply the space with their own products. Maker of the Month – April Jenny Pope – Mapping the Sculptural Change

The objects and jewellery of sculptural artist Jenny Pope will be displayed at Concrete Wardrobe throughout April. The Leith-based maker has been selected as 'Maker of the Month' and will be exhibiting ceramic and driftwood jewellery, paper boxes and sculptural objects. Pope's work explores ideas of place, history, treasure and change; the inescapable processes our bodies undergo through the ageing process, and externally, changes to the natural environment. Her latest collections have an archaeological feel – each piece’s history of experience and change is captured within its own form. Even a small paper box made from a discarded map tells a story of place and change.

Pope is an avid beachcomber. Her work has developed through walking and collecting objects – whether natural, beautifully weathered and intriguingly textured or man-made and hinting at an unknown past.

Pope gained an MA in Ceramics at Edinburgh College of Art in 2005 and loves using versatile and tactile raw material for her creations. She hand builds ceramic pieces using porcelain paper-clay, mixed with other materials. These materials then burn away from the ceramic during firing, exposing fissures and new textures within the piece. Jenny Pope will be exhibiting at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 30th April 2010.
