Compound is a self-published music/creative arts-based magazine, based in Edinburgh, open to all, and structured around the concept of a visual mixtape.
Issue #01 is centered around the theme of ‘Chemistry’. From school bunsen burner experiments, through to the spark of human relationships. From psychedelic space-jazz, so inextricably linked to the imbibing of certain kinds of substances, to the radio-friendly pop MOR of Semisonic, we want to run the whole gamut.
Wherever your mind takes you, we are happy to go . . . we are now opening our doors for your submissions.
Here's how it works:
Select a piece of music that fits your interpretation of the theme. One proviso here, however - it must be available on Spotify. Apologies if that excludes your initially preferred track, but it is important that anyone can gain access to the music, without monetary outlay.
Develop a graphical or written piece to accompany your choice of track. This can be as literal, or as abstract as you like. The important thing is that it can be represented in print (colour, or b&w). Submitted text can take the form of a review/article/poem, etc, that may, or may not, be related directly to the artist/track.
Plain text submissions in any widely used format are accepted, as are specific typographical arrangements, created by the author. Images are to be sent in low-mid resolution jpeg format, in the first instance (see note, below, re: dimensions).
Should high resolution or original vector files be required, we will be in touch. Illustration, photography and graphical design submissions are all welcome and encouraged.
In order to ensure that video artists/filmmakers are not excluded, we would be pleased to receive an appropriate still from the relevant work and a link to YouTube/Vimeo, or similar.
Please note that Compound will be produced in a format to reflect traditional 12” Vinyl artwork – approx. size 340mm x 340mm.
- Whilst Compound #01 will, initially, be in electronic format only (and free to download), it is hoped that a printed edition will be produced, in the future.
Compound is run on a voluntary basis and so there will be no payment for any submitted work. However, should the magazine make it to print, a royalty system will be established to provide a degree of remuneration to those whose work is included. Details of this will be provided in due course.
Please e-mail submissions (or any questions that you may have) to compoundmagazine@hotmail.co.uk by 6th December 2010. We look forward to receiving your work!
