Charitable Thieves
On Saturday 21st August when a great chunk of the nation decided to tune into The X-Factor mainly to laugh at slightly insane people who think they have talent, I went The Wetmore Whistle in Burton-on-Trent to watch a bunch of people that actually were in possession of said talent. They go by the name of Charitable Thieves a rock/indie 4 piece, based in Burton –on-Trent. They currently only perform covers but plan to write and play their own material at some point.
The band are comprised of:
Edd Thorpe - Lead Vocals / Bass Gemma Bower - Lead Vocals / Guitars Lee Jones - Vocals / Guitars / Bass Scott Savage - Vocals / Drums
They performed a range of material from Alkaline Trio’s 'Private Eye' to Katy Perry’s 'I kissed a girl'. Some of the music missed the mark with some of the regular punters, but certainly hit the spot with my generation. The music was tight, the banter natural and light hearted and the vocals were great with both Edd Thorpe and Gemma Bower taking it in turn to take lead vocals, giving a nice mix. One of the highlights was their rendition of Gossip’s ‘Standing in the way of control’, which suited Gemma’s strong vocal style brilliantly, with Edd doing a sterling job on the bass. It got the crowd moving. Scott Savage and Lee Jones were less visible, but never missed a beat or a note.
The band were supported by Derby based acoustic duo Alice and Jono, who performed a range of covers from Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the mirror’ to Jason Mraz’s ‘I’m Yours'. Again another strong female vocal performance was delivered by Alice, and Jono was flawless on the guitar.
So all in all a cracking night of music! Charitable Thieves are available for bookings. Email scott.savage@hotmail.com for more info. Visit their facebook page or Alice and Jono’s facebook page
