The ’Useless Stuff Show’ (The Gallery on the Corner, 155 Battersea Park Road, London SW8 17th – 24th Sept as part of the London Design Festival) features exciting new works by Crook & Jones, designed to challenge the emerging cynicism that ‘we simply don’t need any more stuff’. Eccentric, unexpected, sensual, quirky, unique and limited edition investment art pieces that challenge what the makers see as the ‘Ikeaization’ of the world – making less and thinking more leads to new and more relevant definitions of ‘value’
The slightly disturbing eye catching baroque styled Bug Chair questions the notion of furniture as art and its inherent function. A traditional shaped hand carved frame is encrusted with exotic bugs and upholstered with a highly individual insect pattered fabric (think Timorous Beasties) – elegant but with ironic and subversive twist! The ‘Scribble Table’ is a witty sculptural console table, its intricate and delicate lazer cut pattern conveys spontaneity inspired as it was by a hasty doodle!
Other thought provoking pieces in the show include a school chair reproduced in ceramic, The Lost & Found Bench, The Cloud of Unknowing Table and the Ta-Tar Table, the materials used and designs of which all challenge our tendency to limit definition to a predictable range of familiar forms and functions
The duo are at the heart of a new art & furniture movement alongside designers such as Jaime Hayon, Established & Sons and Thomas Heatherwick and their work is sure to be of interest to gallerists, architects, interior designers and individual collectors looking for intriguing domestic or commercial interior statement pieces.
