A lucky winner from Hull has won a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the crew of the magnificent Hull & Humber yacht for a special sailing experience.
Ashley Howard of Hull scooped the prize for his winning picture of Hull’s inspiring waterfront. The winning picture captured The Deep and tidal barrier with an imposing dark cloud filling the sky above them.
Mr Howard took his prize-winning photograph from the Syntan, a barge on the River Humber.
The caption to accompany the picture was ‘To stand at the junction of the Rivers Hull and Humber, see the old and the new Hull, and think about the vast amount of history that this area of Hulls waterfront has seen, is something I feel we all should do.'
Janet Reuben, Chief Executive of Visit Hull and East Yorkshire, said: “We are very pleased to be able to offer such a wonderful prize to a resident of Hull. The winning photograph was truly deserving of this magnificent prize and is just reward for the hard work shown to capture this city’s waterfront in an unseen way.
Mr Howard said: “To say that I am thrilled is putting it mildly, I am over the moon! It is a wonderful chance of a life time prize and I am really looking forward to the experience. Being a Hull resident I hope everyone in the city will be watching with interest to see how well our boat does in the competition, and now that I've won this hands-on experience I will be watching closer than most!”
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, founder of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, said: “The winning image captures the forces of nature at work in the dark and threatening clouds with great clarity. There were some fantastic entries for the competition, but this image, combined with the sentiment of the caption, really captured the spirit of the competition.”
Central to Freedom is the hosting of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race fleet in Hull Marina, which set off from the Humber earlier this month.
There are just two fully crewed global yacht races on the planet and the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one of them – the only one for non-professional sailors, this unique event features ten stripped down 68 foot ocean racing yachts, each sponsored by an international city, state or country.
