Art Bin and Me, South London Gallery

Audrey Ward & Michael Landy

Michael Landy’s Art Bin experience had the honour of binning a work by Kokomo’s alter ego, Audrey Ward. Aside from creating Kokomo, Audrey has gone back to painting and as it takes time to get up to speed, she just painted and painted. Practice makes perfect and she has been a busy little bee.

The advantages of this is, of course, that she is making progress in leaps and bounds and fulfilling her deepest needs, with the exception of owning a Birkin bag but that’s another story [black, brown or red if anyone’s offering].

The disadvantage is some paintings are real stinkers. A few were painted over and re-used but one in particular was a lost cause, a real lemon. The piece was a cut out of a previous painting which was great but the painting around that was a mess. She painted a diagonal striped background and super glued the two together. Audrey can’t cook either and this painting was a visual version of her “baked Chicken A La Apple with capers” fiasco.

Enter Art Bin. Art Bin is on now at South London gallery and is slowly attracting attention. Tracey Emin and Damian Hirst are two of the artists who have contributed so I’d encourage people to join in. As Michael Landy said in the Sunday Times article “My Week [6 Feb 2010]” “...for some unknown artists it’s their first gallery exhibition.”

“I was very pleased and excited to meet Michael, he was kind enough to pose for pictures and couldn’t be sweeter” Audrey said. “I can now see the point of his piece Break Down. In fact, a few days on from the experience, I’ve had a huge clear out, work stuff, spreadsheets, contacts and even the stuff in my closets.”

It goes to show you the benefit of being brutal, throw out bad paintings, things you don’t want or need, clothes that don’t fit anymore, even your old life. Let go and see.
