Bath photographer Piers Cunliffe has produced a new book - The Butterfly and The Birdcage - documenting the refurbishment of Bath’s historic Theatre Royal.
“I wanted to capture the progression of the emotional and physical transformation of a very much loved theatre," explains Piers. "I wanted to record, for posterity, not only the works but also the human element involved - from the deconstruction of the existing theatre to the pure joy of seeing it completed.”
The Butterfly and The Bird Cage was shot over six months and involved some 5,000 photographs. The book is now for sale via Piers’ website at a cost of £25 plus postage and packing. £5 from ever copy sold will be donated to the Theatre Royal Bath 2010 Refurbishment Appeal.
Piers developed his love of photography whilst in the sixth-form at King Edward’s School, Bath. His passion and skills were recognised and nurtured and subsequently he was the first student from the school to study for a degree in photography. Piers studied Documentary Photography at the University of Wales Newport and graduated with a BA(Hons). Since then, Piers has had much of his work published in Bath magazines, exhibited in Bath and London and has assisted photographers in London and abroad.
