Readers' Studios is a lot like Readers' Wives, except we're talking about photos of some of the most stimulating creative workspaces instead of... well, you know.
Today we're taking a peek at the home studio of Sandra Dieckmann, a freelance illustrator who lives in East London. When she moved to England at just 19 years old, she had only one bag with her which has now turned into a large room filled with treasures and animals of all shapes and forms. This room is where she now spends her time working and dreaming the days away.
In Sandra's own words:
"I love my home studio! I have only been here for a few months and still feel very lucky to have found it; I really regard it as a luxury. It's large. It's tall. It's colourful. The studio is located in East London not far from everybody that I love but still on a very quite leafy street that lets you really relax and get into your own zone.
There are large windows that let the daylight in and it's very colourful and cosy; you can see some beautiful trees from here as well. The walls are adorned with my own illustrations, my processes and also some gifts from other creatives.
I like to see where I'm going with my work and how I'm progressing, that's why I always have it right in front of me! Being able to see recent work that may or may not have worked means that I can use this to guide me and constantly reflect.
I keep it pretty full up with anything that at some stage has attracted my attention, I like visual overload I guess. A patterned, colourful mess at times but as long as there is space on the table I'm happy!
I have a lot of animal images around, piles of books to dive into and fabrics and toys to play with, I don't always remember what I have and try to give things away to people as much as I can. My enjoyment also lies in collecting and re-using. Most of my furniture has been found on the street or bought super cheaply second-hand.
The fact that I have acquired quite a lot 'stuff' through the years makes me slightly uncomfortable; the thought of being tied down to my possessions is a bit odd. I'd quite like the option to be able to throw everything, run away, travel and be free if I wanted.
I may do that one day but for now I'm very happy here. This space opens me up and does my work a world of good I think. For the first time this space is all about inspiration and image making and it's a little world away from the big world out there."
