Readers' Studios is a lot like Readers' Wives, except we're talking about photos of some of the most stimulating creative workspaces instead of... well, you know.
Today we're taking a peek at the studio of Raw, a creative design agency based in a converted mill in the heart of Salford.
In Raw's own words:
"Based in Islington Mill in sunny Salford, we’re a creative design agency that creates thoughtful pieces of design and creative communications, with a focus on craftsmanship and collaboration. Rob Watson and Steve Taylor founded the company five years ago and our team has now grown to seven people with clients such as the Premier League, the BBC Philharmonic orchestra and The FA.
We had been based in the Mill for almost four years, starting in a small, freezing studio in the main building before we moved over to the old engine house across the courtyard. Islington Mill is a beautiful, industry-blackened spinning mill and, unlike much of Manchester’s industrial heritage which has been converted into loft apartments, the Mill is now home to over 50 artists’ studios, an art gallery and a venue space. It’s a real gem of a place, attracting creatives from around the world with its experimental club nights and art installations.
The inspiration for our studio design was prompted by the wealth of original features that the building holds. Our space is the old engine room, which is covered in creamy ceramic tiles and very high ceilings! The height and huge windows fill the space with natural light so we decided to enhance this even further by painting the entire studio completely white.
We then added shots of colour via typographic posters and bits and pieces that we have collected from places as far flung as India. We also installed dry erase paint on two of our walls, allowing us to doodle away and display our ideas during creative meetings, which has enhanced our work. This feature has really changed the way we work and idea generation now flows much more freely around the studio."
