Interview: That Fine Artist

Courtnay Davis a.k.a 'That Fine Artist' is a freelance professional photographer who has her own brand, identity and brings her own creative flair to her images. That Fine Artist's work ranges from deep expressive art to charismatic event photography. Having an autobiographical approach to her work, the artist uses her self-identity, past experiences and her personal views on life to be the focus her work.

She allows the viewer to see aspects of life, without giving away too much - her work echoes a resemblance to a jigsaw puzzle and it challenges the viewer to fit each piece of the puzzle. I caught up with Courtnay to see what she's currently up to...

What it is that you do?

I work as freelance photographer, covering events from award ceremonies to birthday celebrations and work functions. My services also cover photo shoots combining my artistic background and technical skill to create professional photographs. I put my creative re-touch on my photographs whilst adding digital effects on selected sections. Working as a freelance photographer is demanding, energetic and fast work with little room for error. As a professional photographer I have only a few seconds to take each shot so I always ensure high levels of attention to detail.

What have been the highlights of your work?

The highlights of working as an photographer is the amazing opportunities that have been presented to me; from working all over the U.K to meeting some wonderful people it is truly an amazing job! One of the most rewarding jobs I have done was working at an corporate event in the Natural History Museum London. The grand old museum was transformed into a magical and atmospheric place - with acrobats, singers, a cat-walk and dancers. Luckily, I was there to capture every moment on film.

What do you enjoy about the work and what are the biggest challenges?

I enjoy the creative aspects of the job and the results of the photos after being edited. Photography has always got its challenges because you are always pushing yourself to create unique, bold and eye catching images that have your own signature-style on them. I always work to deadlines whilst creating quality photography. As a event photographer you are sometimes under pressure to work quickly when in fast paced environments and to capture every moment, but in these situations you usually get your most interesting images. So the harder you work, the more you think about the photo you’re about to take, and the more you give attention to detail, the greater the reward.

What events, shows and exhibitions have you done?

I have done numerous, shows, events and exhibitions and have worked around the country. An independent exhibition I did which was around the theme ‘intimacy’ proved to be very successful, I exhibited a wide range of my photography, paintings and installations. I was able to publicise the exhibition through word of mouth, internet and my own promotional material which amounted to a substantial amount of people attending the open day - which was brilliant. I am looking forward to another exhibition in March 2011, which I hope to have in a independent gallery in Shoreditch, London.

Who and/or what inspires you?

I have many artists that inspire me in my artwork and photography such as Tracey Emin, Cindy Sherman and Chris Ofili all who take a biographical approach to their work. I like to work from my life experiences, thoughts and beliefs as there is no other subject better I no better. I find working from life is very therapeutic and releases the soul in to your work. When working for myself in terms of photography and artwork I usually deal with controversial topic matters and like to invite the viewer in how I see my world.
