A half-day workshop on sustainable design is being held for small design-led and manufacturing businesses in the East Midlands to examine what is meant by sustainability and how they can integrate it into their everyday business life.
Taking place at Nottingham Trent University’s City site on Thursday 9 December from 9.30am to 1pm, the event has been organised by the university’s Future Factory project.
Part funded by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), Future Factory supports East Midlands’ SMEs in adopting new products, services and business practices which ‘design out’ unnecessary or unsustainable materials and processing, and ‘design in’ features such as environmentally neutral technologies and materials, recyclability and sensitive disposal.
The free workshop will be run by Future Factory project manager, Phil Harfield (as pictured), who has extensive experience in helping businesses to develop their design capacity and environmental standing. Delegates will be introduced to the various issues surrounding the concept of ‘sustainability’ and will explore approaches to sustainability, such as ‘lifecycle thinking’, and the role design has to play in finding answers. Phil will also provide examples which illustrate how the positioning of a product or service can set a brand apart and satisfy customer expectation.
After the workshop there will be an open forum during which participants can explore the issues which affect their business.
