The Fish King – Mr Chen Hong Painting Demonstration Town Hall Galleries, Ipswich Wednesday 21st April 2010, 10am – 12.30pm FREE Event Explore Chinese culture and tradition with Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service this spring. Chen Hong, renowned calligrapher and painter of fishes from Beijing, is our artist-in-residence during April 2010. Regarded as a ‘cultural treasure’ in his homeland, Mr Chen is an expert painter of traditional Chinese motifs and is particularly famous for his images of fish. This is a chance to see through the eyes of the artist. Watch how this unique style of eastern painting is created; examine the skill, precision and artistry that go into this unique experience. This is a fascinating hands-on experience of the ancient arts of china. This is a free event, so drop-in to the Town Hall Galleries, Ipswich on Wednesday 21st April, between 10am – 12.30pm. Tom Hodgson, community History Manager at Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service said, “It is a real coup to have such a significant Chinese artist staying with us and delivering painting masterclasses. His presence builds on the links that we have already made between the museum service and China which will continue grow.” Chen Hong has been invited as part of the Stories of the World project, one of the major projects of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, exploring Chinese culture through new ways of engaging with the collections and offering different perspectives and experiences. Also do not miss the rare opportunity to see Chen Hong’s exquisite art on display at the University Campus Suffolk (UCS), Ipswich Waterfront, Foyer Building from 14th – 29th April.
