Sophie Martin is an Edinburgh-based artist who takes inspiration from the Scottish landscape and wildlife, in particular Edinburgh and the Western Isles.
As well as jointly running Marchmont gallery, Sophie is also a freelance illustrator having graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008. Since leaving college she has enjoyed a number of commissions, including childrens books.
'Drawing on location is essential to my artwork, which is all about capturing immediate impressions of places, people and situations. I like to complete each drawing in one sitting, if possible, to really capture the immediacy of the fleeting moment. My inspiration comes from the world around me, whether it be from new and inspiring places or keenly observing the apparently ordinary and familiar in everyday situations.'
