Glasgow takes a starring role in a new screen dance film that premieres at the Merchant City Festival on 24 July.
Vito Dance Theatre have chosen three Merchant City locations to act as the backdrop to Dance ’Til Your Heart’s Content - a half-hour film funded by Glasgow Life.
The trio of ten-minute films, tilted Morning, Noon and Night, will be filmed at different times of day: a roof at dawn; Glasgow Green at noon and the Clydeside at night.
Dance ’Til Your Heart’s Content will be screened on Sunday, July 24 at GMAC, Trongate 103.
Joan Beattie, founder and artistic director of Vito Dance Theatre, said: “I want to show the dramatic cityscapes and beauty of Glasgow through dance.
“The surroundings will be in control - so everything from the weather, the light, the sounds that we hear and the time of day will be major influences on the dancers’ improvised movements and feelings during filming.”
Joan, who established Vito in 2009, will perform alongside Glasgow-based dancers Kelly Shearer and Gillian Smith. The director is film artist Louise Mather from the band Any Color Black. Composer Keith Beattie will record the sounds at each location - no music will play during filming - which will be incorporated into three original soundtracks.
“I’ve had the idea of creating screen dance around Glasgow for a long time and have been waiting for the right opportunity - the festival is the perfect time to do it.
“Creating the films rather than live dance opens up a whole new world of performance for us as a company.”
