off the wall: Lizzie Mary Cullen at Creative Networks at Leeds College of Art, Blenheim Walk, Leeds, LS2 9AQ on Thursday 31 March. Described as one of the industry’s ‘leading lights’ by Design Week, the influential magazine also names multi award-winning Lizzie Mary Cullen as one of their Hot 50 ‘people making a difference in design’ for 2011.
Having trained at Camberwell, and then graduated from Goldsmiths Design in 2008, Lizzie worked as a production assistant on the Harry Potter films, and spent some time working alongside the set design teams before venturing out into the art world. Lizzie has exhibited internationally in London, New York and Paris, as well as featuring regularly in Design Week, firstly as a front cover story, and more recently as a feature and contributor.
Lizzie has also featured in Blueprint, Computer Arts and Icon magazine, as well as published books. Lizzie’s work is heavily based in situationism in urban space, and rooted in psycho-geography. Lizzie works hard to get that elusive feel of an area and capture it in the drawing - the result is atmospheric depictions of urban life in cities as varied as London and New York.
Using urban mapping techniques, Lizzie creates striking designs and large-scale murals that reflect the character and culture of vibrant cities including London and New York. Fresh from her first solo show, Lizzie has recently adapted her technique for a major commission to produce site-specific murals and designs for Zizzi restaurants up and down the country.
In addition to illustrating her new book for children, Lizzie is also working with Six String Productions, record label of Tom Felton, musician and star of Harry Potter.
Other high-profile clients include MTV, Blueprint magazine, Gestalten Publishing, Anova Books, Raw Nerve and Harvey Nichols.
