Is This a Test?

An evening of audio-visual delights celebrating the synergy of music and moving image, will take place on Saturday 26th June at the Roxy Arthouse.

IS THIS A TEST? – produced in association with the innovative music download site Ten Tracks, features a mind-bending mix of live cinema, performance poetry, film and music in the Roxy Room, with screenings of music videos, film and interactive installations by established and emerging artists in the Video Lounge, all topped off by a two hour VJ set.

The night features a unique live cinema performance of No Man's Land from electronica producer and vocalist Fiona Soe Paing. Her show was performed in last year's Auckland Fringe Festival and rated by the New Zealand Herald as one of the festival highlights:

'Stylish, elegant and sinister...obscure electronica, minimal beats and exotic voice merge seamlessly with animated visuals to evolve into a multimedia artwork' Fiona recently performed at this year's Go North festival and three of the music videos from the live show, by animation artist Zennor Alexander, were also shown in this year's London Independent Film Festival.

Edinburgh-based photographer, filmmaker and artist Alastair Cook premiers MALIN III, a piece commissioned for Is This a Test?.

MALIN III is an audio-visual landscape in collaboration with composer and cellist Luca Nasciuti, who will accompany Alastair. Most recently, Alastair completed Sutherland | Caithness, a six-week exhibition of film and photography at Timespan in Sutherland. You can read more about Alastair and Sutherland | Caithness in our Features section.

Alastair's work is centered on the immediate:

'I try to reflect what I see, what I feel, through this lens. I try to avoid image manipulation, letting the words, film or 35mm negative be raw and honest. This often makes for dark and derelict imagery, but often tinged with positivity, with a move forward.'

MALIN III will be performed this summer at D21 Kunstraum in Leipzig, the Atomino Art Festival in Crimmitschau and at Alastair’s upcoming solo exhibition, The Land and the Sea at Out of the Blue's Drill Hall in Leith, from 29th July–6th August.

Performance poet Tharmas, more well known as Tam Dean Burn in his TV and stage roles, performs Late Lamented Fame Of The Giant City Of New York, the chillingly prophetic poem from 1929 by Bertolt Brecht, alongside Tharmas' specially created visuals and the music of DJ Twitch's Rhaspody in Dub.

Prior to the performances in the Roxy Room, video artist Rachel Maclean will introduce a new work, Going Bananas, plus an exclusive screening of work from James Norton, Vic MacRae, Chris Dooks, Lina Grudulaite, Retchy, Ross Whyte, Carla J Easton, Martin Smith, Andrew Connor, Alastair Cook and Willie Richardson.

Parag K. Mital, an American-born vision researcher concerned with questions of perception and attention, presents X-Ray, an interactive installation. X-Ray creates the illusion of an otherwise broken television set with perceptively coherent signals derived from live audio/video feeds.

Taking the night into Sunday morning is a two-hour set from filmmaker and VJ iMan 4D. iMan 4d, aka Willie Richardson, collaborates on visuals for both upcoming and established musicians, with work for a Band Called Quinn and Siouxsie and the Banshees founder Steven Severin amongst his many credits.

The event takes place on Saturday 26th June at the Roxy Arthouse. Doors open at 7.00. Video Screening starts 7.30 sharp. Live Performances from 8.45pm.

Admission free for the Video Lounge, £5 (£3 advance from artists) for performances in the Roxy Room.
