Gerald Laing’s pop art treatment of Amy Winehouse on display

Renowned Sixties pop artist Gerald Laing is launching an exhibition of paintings and drawings documenting the public image of the late singer Amy Winehouse. Fifty years ago Laing became famous for his iconic images of Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina before turning his hand to sculpture.

In 2007 he was again drawn to celebrity by seeing the media depiction of the flamboyantly dressed and troubled Winehouse.

His picture of Winehouse kissing then husband Blake Fielder Civil was the first in a series of paintings he produced of the singer.

The complete collection of paintings and drawings goes on display at Thomas Gibson Fine Art in London’s Mayfair from October 11th. Twenty per cent of all sales will be donated to the Amy Winehouse rehabilitation project launched by her father Mitch.

Gerald Laing said: “These paintings date from 2008 - a time when each episode in Amy’s increasingly complex life was being portrayed by the media. My work is concerned with the myth, and portrays her as she appeared to us, the public, via the media. Now that the drama has ended, and all is quiet, I hope it will be seen as a tribute from one artist to another."

Thomas Gibson Fine Art is located on the 1st floor, 31 Bruton Street, W1J 6QS. Entry is free. The gallery is open from 10am until 5pm, Monday – Friday. Visit www.thomasgibsonfineart.com for more information.
