Concrete Wardrobe is a unique retail space on Edinburgh's Broughton Street. Stocking work from over 200 Scottish-based or Scottish-trained designer makers, from disciplines as diverse as silk screen printing, weaving, ceramics, knitting, fashion design, jewellery, lighting design, glass and printmaking.
Co-owned by Fiona McIntosh and James Donald, Concrete Wardrobe is dedicated to promoting affordable, high quality work from Scottish-based or Scottish-trained designer makers. Work is manufactured and supplied as one-off pieces or as small batch production ranges, many of which are exclusive to Concrete Wardrobe. The staff also have process knowledge, an understanding of the products within the space, extensive practical skills and all supply the space with their own products. Maker of the Month – May Teresa Cole
Themes of nostalgia and functionality run through the unique hand printed textile ranges of designer and maker Teresa Cole. Collections of vintage kitchen objects, tools, haberdashery and scenes of everyday whimsy inspire her designs.
After graduating in printed textiles from Loughborough University School of Art and Design in 2000, Teresa received a start-up grant from the Crafts Council and support from the Prince's Trust to set up a studio in an old stable block in the village of Barrow Upon Soar in Leicestershire.
The integrity of natural materials is very important to Teresa – all fabrics are sourced from within the UK, linen comes from Ireland and inks are all water-based.
Teresa has exhibited nationally and internationally over the past 9 years, including attending the New York International Gift Fair, Maison et Objet in Paris and undertaking a research trip to Japan. She also teaches textiles students at Nottingham Trent University one day a week.
All items are designed and handmade in England. Commission designs and interior panels undertaken. Teresa Cole will be exhibiting at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 31st May 2010.
