Motherland, Homeland
Motherland, Homeland is an exhibition by the award-winning British photographer Simon Roberts, which explores notions of identity, attachment to home and land, and the relationship between people and place.
Motherland is a bold visual statement about contemporary Russia, fifteen years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Roberts travelled throughout Russia between July 2004 - August 2005, making pictures in over 200 locations, and creating one of the most extensive, comprehensive photographic accounts of this vast country by a Westerner.
The same themes of identity, memory, history and attachment to place - of belonging - resonate throughout We English, his most recent project, where Roberts travelled throughout England in a motorhome during 2008, for this portfolio of large-format tableaux photographs of the English at leisure.
There is even a conversation between Simon Roberts and Professor Stephen Daniels from the University of Nottingham at the private view on the 4th of March; For more information on attendance and the event in general, please go to www.ntu.ac.uk/art/news_events/events_calendar/92804.html for more details.
