Advent calendar gets new twist for old romantics

If a partridge in a pear tree is out of the question in the current economic climate, a free app that provides a daily love poem could be the Christmas gift of choice for cash-strapped romantics.

The Poetry Advent Calendar app – whose 24 doors open to reveal a new poem and a different winter landscape each day in the run-up to Christmas – has been developed by an academic at De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester and a marketing expert from Germany.

Peter Rausch, head of mobile marketing company ADEVASoft, has also taken all the photographs for the app, while Dr Aladdin Ayesh – Reader in Artificial Intelligence at DMU – is the man behind the poetry.

“We wanted to create an app that would bring poetry to the people and that used mobile technology to give a 21st century twist to a traditional advent calendar,” said Aladdin, who has been writing poetry since the age of 10.

“This was a nice opportunity to combine the team’s knowledge of mobile technologies, business intelligence and marketing with my love of poetry – and Peter’s love of photography.

“It’s a fun app that we hope people will enjoy in the run-up to Christmas.”

The Poetry Advent Calendar app can be downloaded free of charge and installed on all Android smart phones. You can download and install the app here.
