Retina Dance Company returns to Déda with brand new show featuring local professional dancers
Nottingham-based Retina Dance Company returns to Déda on Saturday 25 February with their latest work Layers of Skin. Having established itself as a leading contemporary dance company on both the British and European contemporary dance scene, Retina continues to produce innovative and dynamic work. The company was established in 1995 by Artistic Director Filip Van Huffel and has toured work internationally. They last performed at Déda with Antipode in 2009.
Local dance artists from Derbyshire Dance Artists Network will perform alongside Retina Dance Company in the performance on 25 February. The Dance Artists will take part in an intensive three-day residency with the company at Déda on 16-18 February. This is a unique professional development opportunity for the Dance Artists which will be challenging and demanding.
Layers of Skin plays with the idea of hiding. Three layers of skin hide our bones, organs and muscles. It hides who we are, what we think and what we desire. The dancers will shed their layers, exposing a fast-paced and full-bodied show, packed with quirky intricacies and fearless physical choreography.
Artistic Director of Retina Dance Company, Filip Van Huffel, explains the creative thinking behind Layers of Skin: "I especially want to show that a dance performance, that largely remains abstract, can express something that is very specific. I hope Layers of Skin treats the audience to sheer energy and dynamism on stage.”
Layers of Skin is a dynamic and constantly changing production with bold, highly physical choreography. It is a multi-layered performance event bringing together both professional and community performers to work together on stage as a venue-specific dance company.
Retina Dance Company performs Layers of Skin at Déda on Saturday 25 February at 8pm. Tickets are £10 (£8 concessions) and are available from the Box Office on 01332 370911 or online at www.deda.uk.com.
