Beyond Pattern

BEYOND PATTERN is the current exhibition at Oriel Davies Gallery, The Park, Newtown, Powys.
It's a really interesting & inspiring exploration into the cultural meanings of pattern.
'This ambitious project brings together new & existing work by contemporary artists & makers whose work references pattern & its potential to exist as a social, cultural & political commentator. Reaching beyond the purposes of ornamentation & decoration, artists working in Wales & from other parts of the UK present a diverse reflection of how pattern might present opportunities to enlighten, subvert, de-stabilise & offer reflection on our view of the world.'
There is a wide & eclectic range of work on display. A couple of my favourite exhibitors include Nisha Duggal with 'Wherever you are in the world you take up the same volume of space' - images consisting of hundreds of squares, each different & individually coloured.
Catherine Bertola's work also caught my eye. Large scale pen drawings of patterned stockings / hoisery (as partly shown above). Such intricate detail, with the black on white creating strong contrast, high impact images.
Other commisions include - Steve Messam, Angharad Pearce-Jones, Michael Brennand-Wood, Leo Fitzmaurice, Doug Jones, Adam King, Pamela So Henna Nadeem & Andrea Stokes.
Recommended.
